about

In February of this year I was contacted by Philadelphia-based This & That Tapes owner Joseph Carlough to collaborate on a tape. Carlough, whose sweet and sad moon-themed country band Gravey Train had a song about 'an Astronaut who goes to the Moon', and after hearing my debut concept album, 'The Grand Tour', wanted me to write the other side of the tape.

I was listening to the song I'd been sent called 'Liftoffs and Landings'. I really loved the song and the lyric 'I miss my wife' really jumped out to me. I quickly walked into my studio and picked up my guitar and within the hour had written and recorded a response as the 'wife of the astronaut'. I really love diving into stories and creating little worlds so this was a lovely fictional call-and-response project to be a part of.

This version of Dancing On The Moon is different to the cassette. I later reworked a new version for an online release because I kept hearing harmonies in my head and decided to create a copy with them and some additions on.

The tape will be available from October 2nd containing the original version of Dancing On The Moon the day it was written.

lyrics

I watch you leave from the launch pad
so terrified I hope you come home soon
I hold the necklace you gave me
clutching it so tight it chokes my throat

I head home to our home
so empty and cold without you inside
and every night whilst you’re gone
I pull out the telescope and see if I can find you

Just dancing on the moon
Just dancing on the moon
Just dancing on the moon
Just dancing on the moon
please come home soon
Just dancing on the moon

I hear no words from you
been so long without you here I take a new stride
And as the nights go by your pillow takes a new shape by my side
Some days I sit and wallow
but everyone says you’re a hero in their eyes
I pull out the telescope and see if I can find you
and then I smile

You’re just dancing on the moon
Just dancing on the moon
Just dancing on the moon
You’re just dancing on the moon
We’re just dancing on the moon
Together on the moon
We’re just dancing on the moon
We’re just dancing on the moon
We’re just dancing on the moon
Together on the moon
